About Lewis

I was born in a terraced house, off the New Kent Road, in a grimy south-east London in 1954. Even then, I seemed to have a natural interest in the murky strip of meandering water nearby, and  to glimpse a timber barge as it went under a bridge, well, that was something special.

My appreciation of canals was coupled with an appetite for steam railways, buses and even horse and carts, old buildings, and gas lamps!

As I seemed to have a natural ability to draw, I studied and worked in interior design and architecture in Cardiff and London,  but drawing and painting was always a hobby.

In the 1980's, we moved to North Wales and our careers transitioned into the antique business, including  the restoration of buildings, and I have also been a very active member of the Welsh Highland Railway Heritage Group, providing pictures and maps for fund raising.

In the past I have largely used watercolour medium, but I am now developing chalk pastel and pen techniques that I find suit my architectural and watery subjects and the impressionistic atmosphere I am aiming for. I am particularly interested in the industrial history element of the waterways and buildings under threat..eg Langley Maltings. My work is derived from a combination of archival material with a bit of artistic imagination for effect.

I paint and draw canal ' Heritage' subjects for private collectors, combined with running our B&B establishment. We also maintain our link with canals and own a small canal boat in Shropshire.

  I exhibit in North Wales and the Borders and am a new member of the North Wales Society of Fine Art (2019).
